Shopify GPSR checklist: what your product pages must show
If you sell physical products to consumers in the EU, your Shopify product pages need to show four specific pieces of information. Here is what they are and how to add each one.
The short version
The EU General Product Safety Regulation — GPSR, Regulation (EU) 2023/988 — has applied since 13 December 2024. Article 19 covers online and other distance sales. It says the offer itself, which for a Shopify store means the product page, must show:
- Who the manufacturer is and how to contact them.
- If the manufacturer is outside the EU: who the EU Responsible Person is and how to contact them.
- What the product is: a picture, its type, and an identifier.
- Any warnings or safety information, in a language buyers in that country understand.
The exact wording of the law:
Where economic operators make products available on the market online or through other means of distance sales, the offer of those products shall clearly and visibly indicate at least the following information: (a) name, registered trade name or registered trade mark of the manufacturer, as well as the postal and electronic address at which they can be contacted; (b) where the manufacturer is not established in the Union, the name, postal and electronic address of the responsible person within the meaning of Article 16(1) of this Regulation or Article 4(1) of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020; (c) information allowing the identification of the product, including a picture of it, its type and any other product identifier; and (d) any warning or safety information to be affixed to the product or to the packaging or included in an accompanying document in accordance with this Regulation or the applicable Union harmonisation legislation in a language which can be easily understood by consumers, as determined by the Member State in which the product is made available on the market.— Regulation (EU) 2023/988, Article 19
Note the words clearly and visibly and at least. Information hidden in a PDF download or only printed on the box is not enough on its own — it has to be on the offer.
1. Manufacturer details — Article 19(a)
Show the manufacturer's:
- name, registered trade name or registered trade mark;
- postal address;
- electronic address — usually an email address or a contact form URL.
If you make the product yourself, the manufacturer is you. If you resell another brand's product, it's that brand's maker. A store contact email in your footer does not satisfy this on its own: the page needs to say who the manufacturer is.
In Shopify: store these in product metafields (or a metaobject you reference from each product) and display them with a theme block, so you only maintain them in one place.
2. EU Responsible Person — Article 19(b)
If the manufacturer is not established in the EU — for example a maker in the US, UK, China or Korea — the page must also show the name, postal address and electronic address of an EU-based Responsible Person. This is often the importer, an authorised representative, or a fulfilment service provider in the EU.
This is the item most often missing on stores outside the EU. Read who can be your EU Responsible Person.
3. Product identification — Article 19(c)
The page must let a buyer (or an authority) identify the product: a picture, the type, and any other product identifier such as a model number, batch number, SKU or barcode (EAN/GTIN).
In Shopify: most stores already have images. The gap is usually the identifier — many themes don't display the SKU or barcode. Turn it on in your theme or show it in your compliance block.
4. Warnings and safety information — Article 19(d)
Any warning or safety information that has to go on the product, its packaging or its instructions must also be on the product page — in a language easily understood by consumers, as determined by each EU country you sell to. In practice that usually means the official language(s) of each country.
Not every product needs warnings. Toys, candles, electronics with batteries, cosmetics-adjacent products and anything with small parts usually do. See GPSR safety warnings: language rules and examples.
Checklist
- ☐ Manufacturer name shown on every product page
- ☐ Manufacturer postal address and email (or contact URL)
- ☐ If the manufacturer is outside the EU: EU Responsible Person name, postal address and email
- ☐ Product picture
- ☐ Product type and an identifier (model, batch, SKU or barcode) visible on the page
- ☐ Required warnings shown on the page
- ☐ Warnings available in the language of each EU country you sell to
- ☐ All of this visible without downloading a file
Common mistakes
- Showing only the store's own contact email instead of naming the manufacturer.
- Forgetting the EU Responsible Person when the maker is outside the EU.
- Having SKUs and barcodes in Shopify but not displaying them on the page.
- Warnings only in English while selling to Germany, France, Italy or Spain.
- Fixing a few best-sellers by hand and missing the rest of the catalogue.
